Keyboards Are Dirtier than Toilets
It may seem unbelievable, but it’s true – research has suggested that some computer keyboards harbour bacteria that is more dangerous than the microbes found on a toilet seat. The consumer group Which?™ said that tests within its London offices showed that their equipment carried bugs that could even cause food poisoning.
Out of 33 keyboards tested, 4 were regarded as a potential health hazard. One keyboard contained 5 times more germs than one of the office’s toilet seats. Microbiologist Dr Peter Wilson said that a keyboard was often “a reflection of what is in your nose and in your gut.” During the Which? tests, a microbiologist deemed a keyboard to be so dirty that he ordered it to be removed, quarantined, and cleaned. The keyboard in question had exceeded the recommended limit for bacteria by more than 150 times.
How Dirty is Your Equipment?

In recent years, office germ tests have revealed that 12% of keyboards and mice are potential health hazards. In addition, 3% of peripheralspossess germ levels that exceed that of the average toilet seat by 5 times.
While these figures do not implicate every keyboard and mouse, it is nonetheless clear that peripheral devices used in everyday settings may carry dangerous levels of bacteria – especially in work, school, and public environments.
